Learning Something New Every Day!
I am still excited about libraryland, even though I finished school four months ago. I'm learning something new every day. I wish I had more time to write about what I've discovered so I could share it with you.
Here's one: Sock-puppetry. I found this term from reading Merdith Farkas' blog.
Also, I became aware of the research tool that is a free add-on through Mozilla. It's called Zotero, and it's looks good. I wonder if anyone is using it?

Floridays
You should know I am a big Jimmy Buffett fan. One of my favorite songs by him is titled "Floridays" from the album with the same title.
I was performing some collection development duties last week when I found a title of a book of poems called "Floridays." It was written by Don Blanding in 1941. Of course the title of the book caught my eye, so I looked for more information on the author. This is the weird part...He went to high school in Lawton, Oklahoma, and during that time, his neighbor and friend was Joan Crawford. His father was the first police judge of Lawton.
His tropical-themed drawings were adapted into pottery called Vernonware, and he designed fabrics for Aloha shirts.

What I Learned Today on the Reference Desk:
In order to search the JSTOR database, you have to "uncheck" the box in the search area that says "Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR." Otherwise you are instructed to login, which a user should not have to do at our library, since we paid to use JSTOR's database of articles.
In the Reference Desk SOP, it states, "As a general rule we teach rather than find." That's interesting to know. But as I'm trying to help students, I have found you need to anaylze the needs of each user to determine if they want to learn or just get it done. I keep thinking about the saying, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life." (Who said that, anyway? I thought it was Jesus.) Determining user's needs is definitely in Library 101.
The other thing I learned is that if you have never borrowed a book or other material through our Interlibrary Loan, you must go onto the library home page to the ILL page and register with your name, address, etc. to get a user name and password. Then, you can request your book that you need.
